3 BIG THINGS TO MAKE YOU FASTER RIGHT AWAY

1. Look far ahead. Don't ride in a 2 foot box. You must look ahead and be able to plan and be ready for what is coming up, don't just react to it. Some obstacles you can't see on the other side, so remember what's there , and make the adjustments. Focus on the most important things, usually smooth lines and proper set-ups. Also, don't look at the rider you are trying to pass, look beyond them.

2. Don't coast. Coasting is when you are not braking or accelerating. So you must either be braking or accelerating, or a little of both at the same time. Mastering the motorcycles controls determines how your bike is handling and holding onto the track.

3. Minimize your mistakes. It take allot of work and concentration to make up time on your competition, but only a small mistake or lapse of concentration, to lose time. Think of what over pursuing the track can do. Riding over your head, missed lines, sliding out, chopping the throttle to recover, casing or flat landing jumps, falling down, stalling the bike and any other recovery that slows you down! You must ride within your limits. Through lots of riding time, practicing good solid techniques on the bike, proper training and being prepared, you will be able to define your limitations and not go over them. This will keep you improving week after week. Remember who won the race between the hare and the tortoise!

BE PATIENT! RESULTS WILL COME.

Get in the race!

Get in the race! Nowadays with short moto's, the start is so very important. Usually with a midpack or worse start, it's pretty rare to win, unless you are in the wrong class. The idea is to perfect your start techniques so you can get in the race early, the race being at the front, not mired down in the back. Also, if you have never got a good start, (top 4-5) then you probably don't even know what pace you need to attain to win. Just being at the front, dicing with the fast guys will help you understand what pace you are working towards, and also wake you up and make you faster!

A good practice drill to use is this; line up on the starting line, do a good start (put allot of focus and effort in it) then sprint one entire lap as fast as you can. Now, go back and repeat this process several more times, this way you will be practicing your starts as well as working on your first lap speed.

To the parents.

The first tip will be an over view of further discussions to follow.

The first thing that must be stressed, especially to the parents of newer and younger riders is to be patient. Look at the big picture. Motocross is definitely a preparation sport. Teaching your kids good fundamentals and techniques on the bike are important, (schools can teach these things), but this is only part of the overall picture. Other things that must be considered would be goal setting, eating healthy, learning to work on and maintain bikes, cross training, supplemental training ( when a little older and muscles are developed), mental training (positive thoughts, visualization, learning to focus), rest and recovery, and for many, spiritual well being. And maybe the most important thing of all is keeping it fun. Don't burn them out! Just enjoy going to the races with your kids, if they have a desire to win, with your help, they will win. Don't add more stress, a racer is nervous enough! Instead, help them make good decisions, just keep encouraging them, and watch them grow. It's not fair to compare them to other riders, just look in the mirror and ask yourself, "Am I the best there is at what I do? " And even if you are, it took allot of hard work and time. Building a motocross career is like building a business. We will address each topic in the following months in more detail.

Remember, success is a journey, not a destination.
