Why a Motocross School?

For the longest time, I have resisted writing a tip on a subject that seems so self promoting, but I want you to understand that schools in general, including motocross schools are here to benefit the students, not the schools, teachers or instructors themselves. Motocross schools, like restaurants are a service industry. Sure, this is how I make my living, same with why I build tracks, but you must understand that most instructors are not wealthy people, we are servants. If I really wanted to make more money, I would have never traded being a successful executive Chef for being an MX instructor. Look around, are the instructors you know driving around in Mercedes, and living in million dollar homes? The reason I need to share this with you is to make you realize why we do what we do, we love to pass on our knowledge from things we have learned through our careers, to our students. It’s a passion, just like when I was a Chef in the Culinary Arts industry.

I feel that a lot of riders don’t feel that a school can help them, but this is the farthest from the truth. Now I can’t speak for all schools or instructors, there are many out there just wanting to take your money, but the real legitimate schools can really benefit you as a rider or racer. Maybe the name “Motocross School” can be a bit misleading as well, maybe “Motorcycle Riding School” would be more appropriate, because you don’t have to be a serious motocross racer to benefit from our school. Our youngest student was 4 years old, our oldest 65. Many come to us for different reasons, some to be safer riders, some to learn basic fundamentals and skills, others to learn more advanced techniques, some just to get out of a “rut”, and still others come just for fun and to see what a school can offer. Look what Gary Semics has done for so many top level riders in the pro ranks, Mc Grath, Lusk, Windham and Jesseman. Look what Ronnie Tichenor has done for so many national pro’s and amateurs down in Florida, and look how many riders we have helped in the western US, Josh Demuth, Matt Karlsen, Jeremy Chaussee and many top amateurs and pro’s here in Texas. The same can be said for Gary Bailey, Charlie Bogard, Todd Downs, Ricky Johnson and Donnie Hansen as well.

And it floors me that I see riders spending so much money on bikes, gear, trailers, RV’s, pipes, motor and suspension mods and even pit bikes. I can truly say there is no better place to spend your money if you want to ride better, safer and faster than a motocross school. For the fee at a school, you will have that knowledge your entire life! Remember, this is a RIDER sport. You are looking for speed in all the wrong places.

Many parents do a great job working with their kids, but more often than not, it’s the parents that are jeopardizing their kids chances of realizing their full potential. Most kids DO NOT listen to their parents, especially because they don’t have a clue what they are talking about. And if you never rode at an advanced level, you probably aren’t being helpful. You have to be honest here, do you know advanced techniques, know how and when to train them properly, do you feed them the right diet, know about proper rest and recovery, how to motivate them, how to get into their heads and surround them with the right people? Maybe yes, maybe no.

And lastly, my students become my friends, people I see at the races, people I see grow up. Some become team riders, some become regular students, some leave the sport, some I help allot, some I help a little, and if I can’t do enough for some, they have the freedom to find an instructor that will. So if you have been putting off attending a class, give one a try. Besides, if you weren’t interested in learning, you wouldn’t be reading this rider tip?

Were here for you, Larry Morton
